Library In-Service Day

The Seattle and MRJC libraries will both be closed all day on Monday, April 30th for staff in-service. During this time, the staff will be attending training and performing other duties that require our operations to be closed to the public. A book drop will be available outside the Seattle library doors. Books normally due on Monday, April 30th will be due on Tuesday, May 1st. Chat, email, and telephone reference will not be available. Other county departments will not be affected.

Tech Tip: New Computers Coming May 1st!

The law library is excited to announce that we will be installing new computers for public use in both of our locations. The expected launch of these new machines is May 1st, and in anticipation, we wanted to let you know about some changes. For those that have been saving work from our computers to a floppy disk, you will no longer be able to use those storage devices on the new machines. Once the new computers are in place, you will have to save your work to a USB thumb drive. If you find yourself here without a portable storage device, you can always purchase a USB thumb drive from the law library for $10.

New Website Coming May 1st!

In addition to new computers, the law library will also unveil a completely revamped library website on May 1st! The new www.kcll.org is built on an open-source content management system called Drupal. In other words, free software that allows for multiple library staff members to add content. The new website will offer multiple ways to access our extensive collection of legal research links, an easy-to-use calendar of library classes and events, and other exciting features! We welcome your feedback as we roll out the new website.

Did We Miss You?

In December, the law library sent out subscriber renewal packets to everyone who was an active member of the Public Law Library of King County in 2010 or 2011. Any accounts that didn't rejoin for the 2012 subscription year have been closed. If you did not receive your renewal packet for 2012, have no fear! The law library will be sending out reminder packets in early March. If you have any further questions about our subscriber program, please contact Craig Burgess at (206) 296-0940 or by email at craig.burgess@kingcounty.gov.

2012 Subscriber Program Renewal Packets Are In the Mail!

Check your mailboxes! Your annual subscriber renewal packets are in the mail. Enclosed you'll find all the materials you need to participate in the 2012 Subscriber Program. When you receive your invoice, all you need to do is review and return the enclosed 2012 Subscriber Invoice along with a check for your Subscriber fees. Renewal provisions can be found on the invoice. If you have any questions about the renewal process or the Subscriber Program, please contact Rick Stroup or Craig Burgess at 206-296-0940.

Online Training Classes

The Law Library is excited to announce that we will begin offering virtual training classes via the WebEx platform beginning with the Suing Mad class on December 12. Now you can attend a library training class from your office desk or wearing your fuzzy slippers at home!

If you have not attended a virtual class before, here are a few tips:

Subscriber Proration Period Starts on September 1st

From September through December each year, the Law Library reduces the fee for joining our Subscriber Program from $65.00 to $25.00 per attorney. Law firm or solo attorney accounts created during the Proration period are valid until February 1, 2012. If you haven't already joined for 2012, now is a good time to get 5 months worth of privileges at a reduced rate!

Law Library's Annual Report is Here!

The Law Library's 2010 Annual Report is now available! We are using a new format this year; employing charts, a wordle and less text to recap what happened at the law library in 2010. Included is a letter from Judge Yu, who writes that "The year 2010 proved to be one of excitement and activity. The Board convened a "Visioning Session" that brought together 48 community leaders representing attorneys, law librarians, legal services providers, and county government leaders to discuss the Law Library and ways it could serve the public more effectively. An Advisory Committee was subsequently created to assist in refining the ideas from the Visioning Session for adoption into the Library's strategic plan. The work of the Advisory Committee continues into 2011 and you will soon see some new initiatives designed to improve access to legal information."

Tech Tip - EBSCO Database Provides Nolo Press Books Online

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new database from EBSCO that provides online, full-text access to a number of our popular books from Nolo Press. The database is called Legal Information Reference Center. It's available on most of our public computers in both our Seattle and Kent locations. Books available include Neighbor Law, Every Dog's Legal Guide, Copyright Handbook, Getting a Green Card, and Represent Yourself in Court. You can search for information by keyword, general topic or even visually through an interface that graphs your results. You can also browse or search for forms that are included in the books. Results may be printed at the cost of 15 cents per page or saved to your own USB drive.

There are a variety of ways you can backup your computer files, including the use of an external hard drive, use of a high-capacity flash drive, or a subscription with a low-cost online storage site. Here's a quick look at each option:

Law Library Now Hosts Debt Clinic

A new resource for low-income debtors is available at the Public Law Library of King County, located at the Seattle courthouse. A drop-in debt clinic, staffed by attorneys, is now open on Tuesday afternoons from 1 - 3 p.m.

Attorneys from the Northwest Justice Project are launching a free Debt Collection Defense Clinic. The Debt Collection Defense Clinic (DCDC) will assist low-income debtors with advice and assistance for issues surrounding debt collection, including lawsuits, collection agency abuse, supplemental proceedings and garnishment.

Debtors seeking advice and assistance from volunteer attorneys should bring all paperwork related to debt collection and documentation of their income, including paystubs and bank statements.

DCDC does not assist clients with filing for bankruptcy. Debtors seeking advice about bankruptcy should be directed to the King County Bar Association's debt clinic. If debtors have questions about the best referral, they should contact 211 to be screened and directed to the appropriate legal resource.

Tech Tip - Backing Up Your Data

According to a Consumer Reports survey, only half of US households routinely backup their important computer files. As we enter into the summer months, backing up your digital data before taking a vacation or long weekend away may allow you to relax just that much more!

There are a variety of ways you can backup your computer files, including the use of an external hard drive, use of a high-capacity flash drive, or a subscription with a low-cost online storage site. Here's a quick look at each option:

External hard drive - Easy to install, an external hard drive usually requires a simple USB connection to your computer. With some, you may not even need software to get the backups running. You will want to get a hard drive that is equal in size to your hard drive. The one downside is that not all options are portable.

USB flash drives - Tiny and convenient, USB flash drives have gotten large enough to serve as backup devices. Like external drives, they're easy to set up, and may run backups without requiring extra software.. Best of all, you can carry the drive around with you. But that portability can also be a danger, since flash drives are easy to lose or steal.

Online services - One worry with storing backups at home is the potential for theft, fire, or other catastrophic loss. Online storage provides an option outside your house, adding an extra layer of protection by storing your data in multiple locations. Easy to use but slow, especially during the initial backup, you don't have to worry about setting up any hardware, and you can access your data from any Internet connection.

William Howard Taft

While most know him as the 27th President of the United States, William Howard Taft spent four uncomfortable years in the White House. What held Taft's true interest was the court and the law, and once he was freed from the responsibilities of the White House, Taft would go on to serve as the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, a position he enjoyed so much that he wrote "I don't remember that I ever was President."

This podcast is the first in a series titled Supreme Court Classics. This series will take a look at just a few of the notable justices who served on the High Court and how their influence is still felt today.

King County Law Library Becomes Public Law Library of King County

The King County Law Library Board has announced that it is changing the name of the library to Public Law Library of King County. The library's Board of Trustees chose the new name based on a recommendation from its Advisory Committee. Judge Mary Yu, President of the Board of Trustees, remarked about the change, "We just want to be known as widely as possible for what we are-a reliable public library that emphasizes legal resources. We wanted to be sure that non-lawyers feel comfortable utilizing our resources." The library's new name is intended to dispel the perception among self-represented litigants that it is only for lawyers or court personnel and emphasize the public nature of this resource, in hopes of making the public feel invited.

Law Library Board Appoints Permanent Director

In addition to adopting a new name, the Law Library Board also appointed Rita Dermody as Director. As the new Director, Ms. Dermody is dedicated to promoting the library as the first stop for members of the public who need legal help. She is devoted to ensuring access to legal research and is eager to represent the Public Law Library in the greater librarian and legal communities. Ms. Dermody joined the Law Library in 1998 and has served as branch librarian, Collection Access Services Librarian, and Interim Director. After working in virtually every type of law library, she sees her appointment to this position as the culmination of her experience and passion for helping people. She strongly believes in the importance of this library and wants to use her position to "touch more lives and have more impact on legal research."

Tech Tip - Take It To The Cloud

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about something called "the cloud". Simply put, cloud computing refers to resources and applications that are available on the Internet from just about any Internet connected device. For example, email is an aspect of cloud computing. If you use Web mail services like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and so forth, your email is considered "in the cloud" because you can access it from any device with Internet access. Once a resource for small start-ups and other web-based companies, "the cloud" is now emerging as a powerful tool for law firms that wish to secure data online. In his white paper titled "Why Go Cloud? Five Reason Why Lawyers Should Adopt Cloud-based Technology", Brett Burney writes about the concept of cloud computing and how it can benefit the legal community in a variety of ways.

Blog Post of the Month - Intellectual Property Colloquium

KCLL Klues, our Washington state research blog, keeps you apprised of interesting legal news and great research links.

The Intellectual Property Colloquium is an online audio program that offers free podcasts on intellectual property topics. According to the Colloquium website (and the WSBA website), the programs have been approved for CLE credit in Washington. The current program from March 2011, "The Federal Trade Commission," features a discussion of a recent FTC report on patent system reform. Archived programs include "More Than a Game" (from November 2010), featuring the chief legal officers of three of the major video game studios, and "Privacy in a Networked World" (from December 2008). The podcasts are hosted by Professor Doug Lichtman of the UCLA School of Law.

National Library Week April 11-15

The American Library Association's theme for this year's National Library Week is "Create Your Own Story @ KCLL". KCLL is celebrating the week with free Family Law classes and cookies! We will also be offering prizes to patrons who visit us at random times during the week.

The library is excited to announce a new class: Family Law Resources. This 1 hour class is targeted at non-attorneys to help them find resources for family law matters such as divorce, child custody or child support. During National Library Week, we will be offering this class in Seattle on April 11 from 12-1pm and in Kent on April 14 from 12-1pm. To register, please call 206-296-0940.

Please note that our Kent branch will close early at 11:00am on Friday, April 15 for staff training.

The UCLA School of Law has taken on the task of compiling and maintaining a comprehensive guide which 'Provides information about current mobile applications that might be of interest to law students and lawyers.' Clerk's Office Hours of Operation Change Effective January 2011

Beginning January 3, 2011, the King County Superior Court Clerk's Office hours will be changing from 8:30am - 4:30pm to the following:

- The office will open at 9:00am
- The office will be closed from 12:15pm - 1:15pm daily.

The office will continue to close for the day at 4:30pm as it currently does. eFiling will not be affected by these changes, nor will these changes impact the current practices which establish the filing date for documents or cases filed. If you have questions, you can contact the Superior Court Clerk at 206-296-9300 or log onto their website.

Subscriber Renewal Time!

In early December, the King County Law Library sent off subscriber renewal packets to everyone who joined us in 2010. Enclosed were all materials you or your firm would need to renew for the 2011 subscription year. If you haven't already returned your packet to us, we urge you to do so. Your support has been invaluable to the Library's operations. We hope you will support us again through the upcoming year so we can continue to offer you the same great service! Tech Tip - Accessing King County District Court Records Online

Did you know that King County District Court is now making court records filed after January 1, 2005 available online through their DCoR Online Service? The Court charges 25 cents per page to view or print records via the web, or you can visit one of the Court's locations in person and view them for free. To use the service via the web, you will need to set up an account with a valid email address. For more information, see the District Court's DCoR FAQ document.

Blog Post of the Month - "Cheat Sheet" Comparing Westlaw to Lexis Nexis Search Styntax

KCLL Klues, our Washington state research blog, keeps you apprised of interesting legal news and great research links.

The King County Law Library has both Lexis and Westlaw available for free use by its patrons. The two products do not necessarily use the same search syntax. That means that entering the same search terms in a Boolean search in Westlaw may not get you the same universe of results (or any results, for that matter), if you do the same search on Lexis, and vice-versa. The Cleveland-Marshall School of Law library has compiled a comparison chart of the two systems. The chart compares not only the search syntax of the two systems, but also their two citators: KeyCite for Westlaw and Shepard's for Lexis. (Be aware that the King County Law Library subscriptions may not have all of the content referred to in the material from the Cleveland-Marshall School of Law.)

2011 Subscriber Program Renewal Packets Coming Soon

We will be mailing out our annual Subscriber Program Renewal packets during the first week in December. In recognition of tight financial times, the rates for membership in the 2011 Subscriber Program have remained at 2010 levels. Membership in the Program not only helps KCLL continue to provide excellent library services, it enables you to check out materials from both branches and receive discounts on conference room reservations and document delivery services. If you haven’t received your packet by Dec. 15, please call the Law Library at (206) 296-0940. To avoid interruptions to your borrowing privileges, please return your completed paperwork by January 24, 2011.

New to this year’s invoice is a section which allows you or your firm to donate additional funds to the Law Library’s general operations. Many patrons have asked us about this option so we have added it to the 2011 invoice. Donations to the Law Library may be tax-deductible under 26 USC 170(c)(1).

Google Book Links in KCLL's Web OPAC

We recently enabled a nifty feature in our online library catalog -- KCLL Web OPAC – that enables the system to display book jacket images from Google Books. If an image is available, you’ll see it in the Search Results screen to the left of the book’s title. Clicking on the image will take you out to Google Books, where you can read reviews and excerpts from the book and find information about other related titles.

Holiday Hours

The Seattle and Kent libraries will be closed Christmas Eve, December 24th, and New Year’s Eve, December 31st. The Kent library will be closed the afternoon of December 17th for staff meetings. Seattle’s regular hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00-5:00 and Kent is open Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00.

Blog Post of the Month - KCLL Welcomes the Housing Justice Project

KCLL Klues, our Washington state research blog, keeps you apprised of interesting legal news and great research links. The Seattle courthouse offices of the King County Bar Association’s Housing Justice Project have been temporarily relocated from the third floor of the King County Courthouse to the Seattle branch of KCLL. The relocation was prompted by the need to find temporarily space for offices affected by problems with the Superior Court’s Juvenile facility.

KCLL is pleased to be able to provide temporary assistance to the HJP. The services they offer to King County tenants are invaluable. The HJP office in the law library is located in our Legal Resource Training Center room; future law library classes will be taught in one of the law library’s conference rooms.
