Filing a lawsuit with the court is the first step any Plaintiff in a civil case must take to ask the court to decide a dispute.
These first papers filed with the court identify who is being sued, the basis for the lawsuit, and the court in which the lawsuit is filed.
Taking this step causes the court to create a file for the case, and issue a case number.
Civil lawsuits start when the Plaintiff files a (1) Summons and (2) Complaint and (3) serves a copy of the Summons and Complaint upon the Defendant (a process known as Service of Process). See Civil Rule (CR) 3.
